Lower Bounds for Testing Properties of Functions on Hypergrid Domains

چکیده
We introduce strong, and in many cases optimal, lower bounds for the number of queries required to nonadaptively test three fundamental properties of functions f : [n] → R on the hypergrid: monotonicity, convexity, and the Lipschitz property. Our lower bounds also apply to the more restricted setting of functions f : [n]→ R on the line (i.e., to hypergrids with d = 1), where they give optimal lower bounds for all three properties. The lower bound for testing convexity is the first lower bound for that property, and the lower bound for the Lipschitz property is new for tests with 2-sided error. We obtain our lower bounds via the connection to communication complexity established by Blais, Brody, and Matulef (2012). Our results are the first to apply this method to functions with nonhypercube domains. A key ingredient in this generalization is the set of Walsh functions, an orthonormal basis of the set of functions f : [n] → R.

Transitive-Closure Spanners of the Hypercube and the Hypergrid
Given a directed graph G = (V,E) and an integer k ≥ 1, a k-transitive-closure-spanner (k-TCspanner) of G is a directed graph H = (V,EH) that has (1) the same transitive-closure as G and (2) diameter at most k. Transitive-closure spanners were introduced in [7] as a common abstraction for applications in access control, property testing and data structures. In this work we study the number of ed...

We initiate a systematic study of sublinear algorithms for approximately testing properties of realvalued data with respect to Lp distances for p ≥ 1. Such algorithms distinguish datasets which either have (or are close to having) a certain property from datasets which are far from having it with respect to Lp distance. For applications involving noisy real-valued data, using Lp distances allow...
متن کاملTesting Unateness of Real-Valued Functions
We give a unateness tester for functions of the form f : [n] → R, where n, d ∈ N and R ⊆ R with query complexity O( log(max(d,n)) ). Previously known unateness testers work only for Boolean functions over the domain {0, 1}. We show that every unateness tester for realvalued functions over hypergrid has query complexity Ω(min{d, |R|}). Consequently, our tester is nearly optimal for real-valued f...
متن کاملAdaptive Lower Bound for Testing Monotonicity on the Line
In the property testing model, the task is to distinguish objects possessing some property from the objects that are far from it. One of such properties is monotonicity, when the objects are functions from one poset to another. It is an active area of research. Recently, Pallavoor, Raskhodnikova and Varma (ITCS’17) proposed an ε-tester for monotonicity of a function f : [n] → [r], whose complex...
